Electrical wiring doesn't announce that it's failing — it just quietly gets worse until something forces the issue: a breaker that won't stop tripping, an outlet that's warm to the touch, or in the worst case, a fire. Knowing the early warning signs means you can address a wiring problem on your own schedule instead of during an emergency.
An occasional trip when you overload a circuit is normal. But if a breaker trips repeatedly, especially without an obvious cause, it's often a sign that a circuit is undersized for what it's carrying, or that there's a deeper wiring issue.
Lights that flicker or dim when an appliance kicks on — like the refrigerator or a hair dryer — usually point to a loose connection or a circuit that's carrying more than it should.
An outlet or switch plate that feels warm, looks scorched, or has a burning smell nearby is a serious warning sign. This can indicate arcing inside the wiring and should be looked at right away — not scheduled for "someday."
Electrical systems should be silent. Buzzing, crackling, or popping sounds from outlets, switches, or the panel itself usually mean a loose or damaged connection.
Older homes — common throughout Lynn, Saugus, Malden, and other North Shore communities — often still have ungrounded two-prong outlets. Beyond the inconvenience of not fitting modern plugs, these outlets lack the grounding protection that reduces shock and fire risk.
A faint burning odor with no obvious source — not coming from the stove or a candle — should never be ignored. Shut off power to the area if you can do so safely and call an electrician immediately.
If you know (or suspect, based on your home's age) that your house still has knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring, it's worth having it evaluated even if you haven't noticed obvious problems yet. Many insurance companies also flag these systems during underwriting.
