Running a table saw, air compressor, or welder on a shared circuit can overload it quickly, and repeated tripping is a sign the wiring isn't keeping up with demand. A licensed electrician can add dedicated 120V or 240V circuits sized for specific tools, which protects both your equipment and your home's wiring.

GFCI Protection Is Required

The National Electrical Code requires ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection for garage outlets, and for good reason. Concrete floors, dampness, and metal tools all increase the risk of shock. Extension Cord Habits That Cause Fires

Extension cords are meant for temporary use, not as permanent wiring. If you find yourself relying on an extension cord every day, that's a sign you need another outlet, not another cord.

Lighting, Ventilation, and Fumes

Workshops that involve painting, staining, or soldering need proper ventilation, and any exhaust fans or vent motors should be on their own correctly rated circuit. Good overhead lighting also matters: dim garages lead people to work around exposed wiring or breaker panels without a clear view of what they're doing.

Planning for Future Loads

Before adding an EV charger, welder, mini-split heater, or backup generator connection to your garage, it's worth having an electrician check whether your panel has the capacity to support it safely. Retrofitting a circuit after the fact is often more expensive than planning for it upfront.
