More homeowners across the North Shore are switching to electric vehicles, and one of the first questions that comes up is: can my house actually support a home charger? Here's what to know before you buy or install one.
Every EV comes with a Level 1 charger that plugs into a standard 120V outlet — it works, but it's slow, often adding only 3–5 miles of range per hour. A Level 2 charger runs on a 240V circuit (the same voltage as your dryer or oven) and can add 20–40+ miles of range per hour, which is the difference between "charges overnight" and "charges while I run errands."
This is the question that matters most. A Level 2 charger typically draws 30–50 amps on a dedicated circuit. If your home still has a 100A panel that's already carrying a full electrical load — HVAC, kitchen appliances, etc. — there may not be room to safely add a charger without a panel upgrade.

EV charger installations in Massachusetts require a permit and inspection, just like a panel upgrade. A licensed electrician handles this as part of the job, which also matters for insurance and resale — an uninspected DIY or unlicensed installation can create problems down the road.
Some Level 2 chargers plug into a NEMA 14-50 outlet (similar to a large appliance outlet), while others are hardwired directly to the circuit. Hardwired installations are generally more weather-resistant for outdoor use and eliminate a potential point of failure, but either option can be done correctly with the right circuit and breaker sizing.
